Send It on Tallahassee’s Southside Trails
As you make your way towards the southern side of Tallahassee, you’ll notice the rolling hills give way to smooth and flowing landscapes and pine forests that lead to the Gulf of Mexico.
Situated in the heart of Tallahassee’s art district, Railroad Square, the Hyatt House is a great base for exploration. Dining, breweries, shopping and the lively vibe of the funky neighborhood is sure to entertain.
Tracing the route of Florida’s first and longest-operating railroad, the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail is a great option for a smooth start to your day. The Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail runs 20.5 miles from downtown to the coastal community of St. Marks, and it offers multiple entry spots along the Apalachicola National Forest, giving cyclists access to several other trails extending off of the main paved St. Marks Trail. The main trailhead, Capital Circle Trailhead, is located on the west side of Route 363 (Woodville Highway), where trail users can find parking and restrooms.
At the main trailhead, there is also access to the Munson Hills/Twilight Mountain Bike Trails in the Apalachicola National Forest. Munson Hills is a non-technical trail that is a great option for beginning mountain bikers, while still offering a scenic and challenging ride for experienced bikers. The trail was recently revamped with red clay, making the terrain an easy ride for cyclists of all skill levels. The trail proceeds through an upland pine forest that is home to endangered wildlife including fox squirrels, red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, and coyote. Riders can choose the 7.5 mile Museum Loop or opt for the 14 mile Twilight Loop offering a scenic yet challenging ride through some of the most rolling terrain in the Apalachicola National Forest.
